looking to launch & build the next-generation of tokenized
communities. More information can be found in the thread above

Google Issues Emergency Security Update. Google has issued an emergency security update for all
Chrome users as it confirms that attackers are already
exploiting a high severity zero-day vulnerability. Given the
interaction between Chrome and many of our Metamask wallets,
it’s definitely important to update Chrome as soon as
possible. If you haven’t already, do so before continuing to
read this newsletter! HIGH ALERT 🚨

Thoughts on DAO Tooling. At this point, DAO Tooling is a bit of a meme. As
Patrick Rivera rightfully puts it in this piece, "Saying
you’re building DAO tooling is like saying you’re building
tools for corporations. It doesn’t really mean anything." He
continues on to lay out a playbook for thinking about and
building a DAO tooling company: niche down, start with
services, focus on retention. Overall, this is great advice
for DAOs and DAO tooling startups alike who are looking for an
honest take of the space. TAKE NOTES 📝

The Latecomer’s Guide to Crypto - Edited.
In isolation, the NYT "crypto guide" recently published
by Kevin Roose was… decent. He highlights some of the
opportunities in front of us, specifically DAOs, but creates
false equivalencies between the benefits of crypto and the
"hacks and scams," making it seem as though they are just
as common and widespread. That said, Molly White’s
takedown
of the piece is even more critical… of crypto. Molly and her
collaborators conducted a line-by-line breakdown of why Kevin
is completely wrong about the idea that people should care
about crypto. Despite some clear biases, reading both pieces
will give a great view of some mainstream takes on crypto.
PERSPECTIVE... 👀

BAYC Raises $450m to Build an NFT "metaverse".
Yuga Labs, the team behind Bored Ape Yacht Club and who
recently acquired CryptoPunks and Meebits IP, has raised
$450m led by a16z. The company is now worth over $4B, and
with the launch of its new ApeCoin, will continue to build
what they call the "open metaverse." While it remains to
be seen whether a large, venture-backed company can build a
truly open metaverse, this is certainly a better alternative
to whatever Meta is building. WILD 🧬

A Guide for Designing Online Community Governance.
Friend of Forefront Austin Robey gave a presentation on online
community governance design to the Protein community, and
wrote this piece as a companion to the presentation. In it, he
highlights a wide range of org governance structures, and
walks us through how to create an organizational "decision
making matrix." The goal is to ensure that everyone in
the company knows what responsibilities lay with which role.
We’re actively working on this for Forefront contributors, and
it’s worked tremendously well! SPOT ON 🎯

No Bosses: What It’s Like Working at a DAO. This piece highlights some full-time (and part-time) DAO
contributors, and explores what it really means to work in a
DAO: how do you get paid, how do you contribute, and how does
work get done. While pretty surface-level, the piece does a
good job of explaining to those new to the idea of a DAO how
things work practically. FUTURE OF WORK (A GLIMPSE) ⚡️

DAOs as Financial Flash Mobs and Hyperstructures.
This piece from Jon Hillis of CabinDAO is a must-read for
understanding DAOs, tokenized communities, and the evolution
of community economic models. Jon said it best towards the end
of the piece: "Perhaps you start with an idea, and you
crowdfund a small treasury to accomplish it. The crowdfund
provides the initial capital and the token distribution list.
But, instead of exhausting the fuel of the meme on a financial
flash mob, you thoughtfully design a hyperstructure protocol
to support the meme. Then, you use the flash mob funding to
bootstrap from a tokenized community into a DAO-based
hyperstructure by embedding the core idea of the meme into a
hyperstructure protocol." A GREAT PLAYBOOK 📚
