Let’s get into it.

Web3 Social Landscape by Thomas Scaria and Natasha Khimji. "DAOs are platformless social networks." In this fantastic essay, Thomas and Natasha from Prysm explore the web3 social landscape, from DAOs like Forefront and Seed Club to tools like Mirror, Context, and ENS. The duo highlights Social DAOs and Investment DAOs as two DAO use-cases that emphasize socialization, and the tooling pushing these communities forward. GREAT READ 🔮

DAOs Aren’t A Fad — They’re A Platform. DAOs in Forbes. Friends from Seed Club, Tribute Labs, Syndicate Protocol, Krause House, and more share their thoughts on the opportunity that DAOs provide, what has already been accomplished, and the challenges that lay ahead. From future market size to buying an NBA team to DAO legal frameworks, there’s a ton discussed in this piece for the newbie and the expert alike. MAINSTREAM IN STYLE 💎

"We're Freaking DAOing It". Next, we highlight the people working in DAOs. This piece from CoinDesk highlights some key perspectives from Patti of FWB, Rafa of Mirror, Juan of PleasrDAO, and more on what life is like working in a DAO. The positive comments surround the fact that DAOs allow you to “work on cool stuff” and get paid, but there is also lots of conversation around organizational structures and other DAO traits that have yet to be completely figured out. GOOD VIBES ONLY ✨

Anticapture: A Framework for Capture-resistant Governance. This piece from Spencer Graham may go down as one of the most foundational pieces to understanding why DAOs are a truly revolutionary form of organization. He begins with the premise that "governance capture" has become a fact of life, and concludes with DAOs as a potential solution: "A DAO is a network of agents who share common purpose, and are the only ones who hold the power to execute actions that manage a set of shared resources." INSIGHTFUL PIECE 🔥

VC-backed DAO startups are racing to define what DAOs actually are. As VC money pours into the space, DAOs will have to walk a fine line between full autonomy and decentralization, and raising the capital necessary to fund their communities. Additionally, most DAO tools are now VC-backed, raising the question of whether VC business models can fit in this new world. Techcrunch covers this trend, highlighting tools like Syndicate, Utopia, and more that are trying to help DAOs navigate while keeping one foot in the "old world." DAO SEMANTICS 👀

Mainstream Embrace of NFTs. On Feb 3rd, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Cameo, and GameStop all dropped major news about their (respective) plans to execute in the world of NFTs. Each company has significantly different plans, and are using different blockchains, but the mainstream moves into NFTs show no signs of slowing down. URL 🤝 IRL

The Next big Trend in NFTs. Speaking of NFTs, Music NFTs are hot right now. This piece from Bankless explains how Music NFTs create an entirely new business model for artists who want to keep their music free for fans, while creating scarce collectibles for superfans. Some of these metrics, like the comparisons between Catalog vs. Spotify revenue for artists, are wild. Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how Music NFTs can bootstrap DAOs and what community-governed music brands will look like. BRIGHT FUTURE 🎹

India Finally Warms to Crypto With Tax, Digital Currency. After initially taking a harsh stance against crypto, India is warming up with some new policy announcements. National officials have proposed to launch a digital rupee issued by the central bank in the upcoming fiscal year. The country also plans to tax income from the transfer of virtual digital assets. WHO'S NEXT ⏳

Who’s Behind BAYC, The Secretive NFT Brand? You may have seen some Twitter discourse this week about a certain Buzzfeed article doxxing the founders of BAYC, arguing that their anonymity could be used to cover up bad behavior, despite discovering no wrongdoing from the BAYC founders. That said, it seems like this information wasn’t particularly hidden to begin with, but an interesting way to highlight this problem nonetheless. BUT WHY 👀
